Focus areas

The handful of subject spaces you want to be recognised in. Broader than a topic, narrower than your market, with the topics that serve each one underneath.

What to do

Keep the spaces your business is actually for, archive the ones it is not, and add any the site failed to say. The list puts what needs attention first: least headroom used, most left unserved.

How it works

  • Focus areas are read top-down from what your own site argues, not grouped out of your topics. That separation is the point: it is what lets us say "you want to be known for this and nothing serves it", which a layer built from your topics could never say, because every area would be populated by construction.
  • Every focus area on the list is one the business is pursuing. There is no separate confirm step: the list is yours to cultivate, and what is left on it is the strategy.
  • Archiving a focus area keeps its topics. They show as being in no focus area on Topics, where they can be moved or left as a positioning gap.
  • Health rolls up from the topics underneath, and carries how much of it was measurable. A focus area scored on two signals is drawn faint, so a confident-looking position cannot be read off thin evidence.
